EXTRA TIME GOAL BLITZ SEES BREADALBANE THROUGH 25 November - Ashleigh CupNewtyle Hearts 4 Breadalbane 9 The Ashleigh Cup served up a feast of goals as Breadalbane travelled to Newtyle looking to halt a run of three successive cup defeats. The Aberfeldy side got off to the best possible start when a 20 yard strike from young full back Rory Cromb found its way to the bottom corner in the opening four minutes. Breadalbane failed to build on their lead, however, until the second half, when the home keeper fumbled a da Silva cross over the line. Newtyle pegged one back when a right wing cross looped over Menzies into the far corner, but da Silva restored the two goal lead with a penalty after he had been pulled down in a goalmouth melee. At this point Breadalbane appeared to be coasting to victory but two poorly defended free-kicks saw the third division side haul themselves back into contention and level the scores. Manager Robertson was then forced to make two changes as goalkeeper Menzies limped off to be replaced by Jacobs and the manager himself came on for da Silva, who had been on the end of some harsh treatment from the Newtyle defence throughout the game. Despite creating several chances to win the match, at 3-3 the tie went into extra time. And that was when the fireworks really started. Almost immediately Carr found himself free of the home defence and his coolly taken goal seemed to galvanise his side. Further strikes from Robertson and Price saw Breadalbane in a comfortable position by half-time. The manager went on to record a quick fire hat-trick with a trademark left foot strike and a penalty. Despite losing one more at the other end, Gavin Price nodded home his second of the day and Robertson showed some leniency to the home side by refusing to bring up double figures, generously passing up an open goal opportunity from six yards out. An amazing 13 goals, then, certainly made for an eventful game and the eventual victory provided a welcome boost for Breadalbane after a disappointing run of results. Defensively, though, they’ll be hoping to tighten up considerably as they return to league duty this weekend and the visit of league champions Letham.
